He was born in Musselburgh, educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond and Aberdeen University and ordained in 1870. In 1876 he became Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Keith,〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, Hamilton & Co 1889〕 and later a Canon of Inverness Cathedral.
